Overview
The zebra pleco, known by its L-number L046, is one of the most beautiful and sought-after plecos: a white body with crisp black stripes and bluish eyes, all in just 3-3.5 in (7-9 cm). It is endemic to a short stretch of the Rio Xingu in Brazil, where it lives among rocks in warm, fast, highly oxygenated water.
Its habitat is threatened by the Belo Monte dam and by collection for the trade, so the species is protected in Brazil, which bans its export. That is why you should buy only captive-bred zebra plecos, now available from breeders in Europe, Asia and the US, and be wary of cheap offers with no clear origin. This is a fish for experienced keepers with a stable tank.
Care and tank setup
One or a few zebras can live in about 26-30 gallons (100 L), but water matters more than volume: they need high temperatures of 81-86 °F (27-30 °C), strong flow and plenty of oxygen, and very clean water with low nitrates.
- A powerhead or strong canister filter plus aeration.
- Sand with flat stones and many narrow caves (slate or ceramic), at least one per fish.
- Dim lighting; plants are optional, since few handle this much heat.
Zebras are peaceful, though males defend their caves. Because of the heat, tankmates should be calm, warm-water fish such as discus or other Hypancistrus; avoid competitive bottom feeders that steal food. They are shy and strongly nocturnal, and in a busy tank full of active fish they will stay hidden all the time.
Feeding
Unlike many plecos, zebras are omnivores that lean carnivore and eat very little algae. Offer sinking shrimp or fish-based pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp and mysis, plus some plant-based food now and then. Feed near the caves after lights-out and remove leftovers, since water quality is everything with this species.
Breeding
Zebras are cave spawners. The male lures a female into a tight cave, where she lays a small clutch of large eggs (around 10-15) that he guards until the fry absorb their yolk sacs. Success requires warm, soft, oxygen-rich water and patience, as they take years to mature. Thanks to captive breeding, there is no need to take them from the wild.
