Overview
Glossostigma, or simply "glosso", is a small carpeting plant from New Zealand and Australia, where it grows along the edges of lakes and ponds that flood periodically. Its light green, spoon-shaped leaves sprout in pairs from runners that creep flat across the substrate.
It is one of the fastest carpet plants available: under the right conditions it covers the foreground in a few weeks, forming a fresh, bright lawn popular in aquascaping. Its rapid growth also makes it a bit more forgiving than HC Cuba during the startup phase, but it is still a plant for tanks with high light and CO2. Without them it grows straight up and loses all its appeal.
Care and tank setup
The deciding factor is light: if strong light does not reach the bottom, the stems shoot upward several inches instead of spreading sideways. Pair it with injected CO2 and a nutrient-rich substrate.
- Substrate: fine and fertile aqua soil; in inert sand or gravel it will need root tabs.
- Planting: split the clump into leaf pairs with a bit of stem and root, then bury them almost completely with tweezers, about 0.5-1 in (1-2 cm) apart.
- Space: do not shade it with tall or floating plants; it needs direct light.
- Temperature: it prefers moderate warmth, roughly 68-79°F (20-26°C), rather than very warm water.
It suits tanks from about 18-24 in (45-60 cm) wide and up, where its slightly larger leaves than HC look their best. Keep digging fish away until it is well rooted.
Fertilizing and trimming
Fast growth means high nutrient demand: dose a complete fertilizer with macros, micros and iron, and watch for deficiency signs such as pale leaves. Trimming is essential: cut the carpet back every one to two weeks during peak growth so it does not stack into layers. Once it overlaps, the lower layers rot and the carpet lifts. Always siphon out the clippings.
Propagation
It propagates by runners that creep over the substrate, putting down roots and new leaves at every node. To expand the carpet or replant, cut rooted portions and bury them where you want them. It also grows very well emersed, so a few weeks of dry start lets you cover the foreground before flooding the tank.
