Carpet plants spread across the substrate with runners or creeping stems until they form a green lawn. They are the signature of many aquascapes, but they are also among the most demanding plants in the hobby.

Most carpeting species need strong light, injected CO2 and a nutrient-rich substrate. Dwarf baby tears (Hemianthus callitrichoides "Cuba") and glossostigma are the most demanding; Monte Carlo and dwarf hairgrass can manage with medium light and good fertilization, although they spread much faster with CO2.

  • Easiest options: dwarf sagittaria (Sagittaria subulata) and Marsilea grow without CO2, more slowly but reliably.
  • Planting: plant small portions close together and keep the water clean during the first weeks, when algae can take over.
  • Riccia: a floating liverwort that can be tied down to form a carpet; it needs regular trimming.

Carpet plants work best in shallow tanks, where light reaches the bottom, and in layouts with few fish that dig. Avoid adding goldfish, large cichlids or diggers that uproot them. Be patient: a full carpet usually takes 4 to 8 weeks, sometimes more without CO2.
