Overview
Pogostemon helferi, widely known as downoi (Thai for "little star"), is a highly decorative dwarf plant. It forms compact rosettes of bright green leaves with wavy, crinkled edges, arranged in a star pattern that gives a texture unlike any other foreground or midground plant.
It comes from Thailand and Myanmar, where it grows in streams and seasonally flooded areas, often on rocks. As a tropical plant it handles heat well, so it fits tanks with discus or shrimp kept at higher temperatures. It is a favorite in nature-style layouts and nano tanks, in front of rocks or driftwood. It is not difficult, but it grows slowly and needs enough light and nutrients to avoid stalling.
Care and tank setup
Use it in the foreground or midground, in small clusters or tucked around stones, where its star shape can be seen up close.
- Light: medium to high. In low light it stretches and loses its compact form.
- CO2: optional, though with CO2 it grows noticeably faster and denser.
- Substrate: fine and nutrient-rich; it can also be tied to rocks or wood, where it grows like a light epiphyte.
- Planting: separate the stems from the pot or tissue-culture cup and plant them individually; do not bury the center of the rosette.
Debris tends to collect between its crinkled leaves, so good flow helps. A typical mistake is planting it in the shade of tall plants, where it simply stops growing. Shrimp graze biofilm on it without harming it.
Fertilizing and trimming
It needs a complete fertilizer with micronutrients, plus root tabs if it is in the substrate; pale leaves or white tips point to iron or potassium deficiency. It hardly needs trimming: just remove old leaves and, when rosettes get too tall, cut off the tops and replant them to keep the group low.
Propagation
It propagates through side shoots that sprout at the base of the stem: once they are an inch or two long, cut them off and plant them as cuttings. You can also top tall rosettes and replant the tips. The process is slow, so start with several plants. Toss extras in the trash or compost, never in streams or ponds.
