Overview
Asian ambulia (Limnophila sessiliflora) is a stem plant from Southeast Asia with very fine, feathery leaves arranged in whorls around the stem. It looks a lot like cabomba but is far more forgiving: it grows fast, tolerates a wide range of water and looks good without CO2 injection.
That makes it one of the best background plants for beginners. It fills space in weeks, outcompetes algae for nutrients and gives fry and shrimp plenty of cover. The trade-off is frequent trimming. Important: it is a federally listed noxious weed in the United States and is restricted in several states, so check local rules before buying and never dump trimmings outdoors.
Care and tank setup
It suits tanks from about 15 gallons (55-60 liters), ideally 16 inches (40 cm) tall or more, since the stems reach the surface quickly. Plant it in the back or along the sides in groups of 5 to 8 stems spaced about an inch apart so light reaches the lower leaves.
- Light: medium is enough. In low light the stems stretch and the bottom goes bare.
- CO2: optional; with it the plant grows denser and more compact.
- Substrate: any fine gravel or sand; it feeds mainly from the water.
It works with nearly every community fish. Avoid plant eaters such as goldfish, silver dollars or large angelfish, which shred the soft leaves. A classic mistake is letting it run wild until it forms a floating mat that shades everything else. Another is planting the store bundle still squeezed in its lead weight or rubber band, which rots the base.
Fertilizing and trimming
Because it grows so quickly, it pulls lots of nutrients from the water column. Dose a complete liquid fertilizer with iron once or twice a week. Pale or yellowish tips usually point to a lack of iron or nitrogen. Trim when it hits the surface by cutting stems to the height you want; replant the tops and the base will branch again. Every few months, replant the whole group from healthy tops.
Propagation
It propagates effortlessly from cuttings. Cut 4 to 6 inch (10-15 cm) tops, strip the leaves from the lowest section and push them about 1.5 inches into the substrate. They root within days. The trimmed stems send out side shoots, so the stand gets bushier every time you cut. Give extras to other hobbyists or put them in the trash, never in ponds, streams or drains.
