Goldfish food: pellets, flakes and vegetables for healthy goldfish

Goldfish eat anything and always seem hungry, but that does not mean they should eat a lot. A plant-rich diet, carefully portioned and fed as sinking food prevents most digestive problems.

How goldfish eat

The common goldfish is an omnivore and, like other carp, has no true stomach: food passes straight into a long intestine. That means it digests several small meals better than one big one, and dry food that swells inside the gut can cause trouble. In the wild, goldfish spend the day grazing on algae, plants, larvae and small invertebrates along the bottom.

That is why goldfish food contains more plant ingredients and less protein and fat than food for carnivorous tropical fish. As a rough guide, goldfish formulas sit around 30-40% protein, compared with 45-50% or more in many tropical foods. Feeding generic tropical flakes every day is not a good idea: goldfish get fat, foul the water faster and are more prone to constipation.

Sinking pellets or flakes

Floating flakes work fine for slim-bodied goldfish such as the comet, which swim fast and eat at the surface without issues. In round-bodied fancy varieties, such as the oranda, the ranchu or the telescope eye, feeding at the surface makes them gulp air, which is linked to buoyancy and swim bladder problems: fish floating sideways or upside down, or struggling to swim down.

Brands such as Tetra, Hikari, Fluval, Omega One and Repashy offer goldfish lines in flakes, floating and sinking pellets, and gel food. Check that the first ingredient is fish, krill or insects and that spirulina or other plant matter is included, not just cereal flour.

Tip: soak pellets for a few minutes in a cup of tank water before feeding. They swell outside the fish instead of inside its gut, which fancy goldfish especially appreciate.

Vegetables, portions and temperature

A couple of times a week, replace one meal with vegetables: blanched, shelled peas (now and then, not daily), zucchini, spinach or lettuce, blanched and cut into small pieces. They add fiber and help prevent constipation. Remove anything left after a few hours.

  • Portion: what they eat in 2-3 minutes, once or twice a day, even if they beg for more; one fasting day a week.
  • Cold water: goldfish eat less as the temperature drops. Below roughly 54 °F (12 °C) their digestion slows a lot and food should be cut back.
  • Waste: goldfish are messy. They need a strong filter (more than 5 times the tank volume per hour) and weekly 20-30% water changes.

Everything a goldfish needs at home is covered in coldwater aquarium, and the general feeding rules in how much and how often to feed fish.

Common mistakes

  • Feeding every time they come to the glass begging.
  • Feeding only floating flakes to orandas, ranchus or telescopes.
  • Giving high-protein tropical food every day.
  • Never offering vegetables or fiber.
  • Buying a huge tub that takes months to finish and loses its vitamins.
  • Keeping them in an unfiltered bowl, where any extra food turns into ammonia.

Warning: a goldfish should never live in an unfiltered bowl. It can grow past 8 inches (20 cm) and needs a roomy, cycled tank with strong filtration; think 30 gallons (around 115 L) or more for a pair of fancies. And never release one into rivers, lakes or public ponds: goldfish cause serious ecological damage.

We compare spec sheets, verified reviews and real-world use criteria, but we do not physically test the products: use the products above as a starting point and check each listing for ingredients, format (floating or sinking) and pellet size.

Frequently asked questions

Are pellets or flakes better for goldfish?+

Both work for common goldfish and comets. For round-bodied fancies such as orandas or ranchus, soaked sinking pellets are better, because eating at the surface makes them gulp air, which is linked to buoyancy problems.

How many times a day should I feed a goldfish?+

Once or twice a day, only what they eat in 2-3 minutes, with one fasting day a week. They always look hungry, but overfeeding is the most common cause of dirty water and digestive problems.

Can goldfish eat tropical fish food?+

Occasionally, yes, but not as a staple. Tropical food usually contains more protein and fat than goldfish need, which leads to weight gain, constipation and more waste in the water.

What vegetables can I feed my goldfish?+

Blanched, shelled peas now and then, plus blanched zucchini, spinach or lettuce cut into small pieces. Remove leftovers after a few hours so they do not foul the water.
